Indian Society of Transplant Surgeons was created to cater to the unfulfilled educational demands of Transplant Surgeons. While the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation has existed for many years under whose umbrella are many subspecialties, each of the subspeciality except transplant surgeons has its own registered society. There was a long-felt amongst the Transplant Surgeons in the country to develop this society.
With most of the transplants in the country being currently sourced from living donors, our current rate of 0.8 ppm of deceased donation is way far behind that of developed nations. One of the reasons for this low rate is the lack of a systematic approach to address this challenge and to increase the deceased donations, India needs committed professionals in the speciality of Transplant Surgery.
