President Address

Indian Society of Transplant Surgeons was created to cater to the unfulfilled educational demands of Transplant Surgeons. While the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation has existed for many years under whose umbrella are many subspecialties, each of the subspeciality except transplant surgeons has its own registered society. There was a long-felt amongst the Transplant Surgeons in the country to develop this society.

With most of the transplants in the country being currently sourced from living donors, our current rate of 0.8 ppm of deceased donation is way far behind that of developed nations. One of the reasons for this low rate is the lack of a systematic approach to address this challenge and to increase the deceased donations, India needs committed professionals in the speciality of Transplant Surgery. The specialty of Transplant surgery and their surgical societies exist in all developed countries and have contributed to the development of standardised protocols as well as research leading to unparalleled growth in the field of organ donation and transplantation.

One of the aims of this Society is to improve the quality of transplant surgery in the country by holding regular workshops, CME’s and conferences on the surgical aspect of transplant. This inaugural meeting will provide a platform for the surgeons to come together to brainstorm regarding the best way to develop this specialty further in our country.
